Artist:
TIAMAT
9nd-16th September 03
Album: PREY -
Label: CENTURY MEDIA
release date october 27th 2003
Well...
it's that time again for me to dust off my brain cells and see
what tickles my fancy in the wonderful world of music!
There is just soooo much to choose from at the moment... what
with new albums from Deep Purple, ALice Cooper, Kiss, Hanoi
ROcks & Iron Maiden, plus gems by Richie Kotzen, the Tangent,
Hardcore Superstar, as well as some great reissues and best
of's: Michael Schenker, Steve Miller Band, Uriah Heep ... to
name but a few if you have the dosh for them... TREAT YOURSELF!...
AND my special pick this week is becoz i'm in the mood for something
a bit laid back gothmetal : TIAMAT bring us "Prey".
This is mellow, powerful, symphonic. AND John Edlund's voice
brings his special touch to both catchy songs like "wings
of HEaven" and "carry your cross" as well as
slower atmospheric floydesque songs including "Nihil"
& "the pentagram". Kick off your shoes, lie back
and relax. Lovely!

Artist:
HUGHES TURNER PROJECT
2nd-8th September
Album: HTP 2
Label: MTM
release date september 29th 2003
Glenn Hughes and Joe Lynn Turner together on one album? OH yes!
2 of the best voices of rock to delight your senses and stimulate
the 5 juices! If you missed HTP 1, do not fret, HTP 2 is equally
superb... Not content with bombarding our ears with their brilliant
vocal talents, and GLenn playing his inimitable bass, they also
bring us you some amazing drums and solo guitar on "Losing
my mind", courtesy of none other than Chad Smith (Red Hot
Chilli Peppers) & Steve Vai!
All in all, this is one hell of a fabulous treat. AND, if you
have some spare cash, dont forget GLENN and JOE's solo albums,
which are equally spine tingling! I look forward to them touring
as well, keep rockin guys!

LIVE 18th
- 24th August
Album: BIRDS OF PREY
Label: RADIOACTIVE RECORDS
release
date 26th may 2003
Mmmmmm! LIVE! it's good to be here! LIVE - pronounced as in i'm
alive - have been bringing us their distinctive sound for over
a decade, and this album has some wonderful, melodic songs full
of lyrics to help us think and feel. This is a perfect blend of
musical frequencies to take us towards the autumn Equinox where
we need to find our balance! LIVE's singer/songwriter ED KOWALCZYK
is on a path of personal transformation through selflessness which
reflects strongly in his lyrics about being strong, being down,
enjoying sunsets and the wonder of the birth of his daughter.
If you like smooth guitars and soaring catchy melodies, then check
this out. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, especially to listen to late at
night whilst staring at the clear skies and shining stars! AND...
for when you need something a bit harder, yet still surprising
melodic... my other choice this week is Sevendust's album Animosity
(out on TVT records). To see wot else I play
go to www.pandorasrockbox.com and watch out for these artists
and associated talk exploring life, love and the universe in my
Armageddon Rock Box Radio show. ENJOY!

Artist:
OPETH 11th
- 17th August
Album: DAMNATION
Label: MUSIC FOR NATIONS
release date 14th april 2003
THis
week i wanted something i could happily kick back and chill
out to, something to listen to all the way through and float
off into other dimensions. WELL, Opeth's melodic offering in
the shape of "Damnation" fills the bill totally. Here's
a selection of words that meander into my mind as I listen and
write this: beautiful, moody, quiet, atmospheric, soaring keyboards,
lovely guitars, meaningful lyrics, gets me thinking, gets me
feeling, sends me to higher realms, wonderful licks and beats
and interesting progressions! OH yes! If you thought that Opeth
are only a growly band with some quieter bits... think again.
They have depth & passion and this is a brilliant album
which may well be one of of my albums of the year!
|
 |
Artist:
MERCURY TIDE 4th
- 11th August
Album: WHY
Label: CENTURY MEDIA
Why: Greetings everyone! Wehay! Here's another offering of what
has tantalised my eardrums recently. WHY? becoz this is cool!
I know that the music you listen to depends on the mood you are
in: some days you want something upbeat, sometimes you want to
float off into space! What you get with MEWRCURY TIDE's "WHY"
is a mix of songs that are soft & piercing, as well as driving
& foot tapping. Right, WHO ARE THEY? MERCURY TIDE is singer
Dirk Thurisch from ANGEL DUST, who is branching out into a more
melodic feel mixed with something a little bit nu/proggy &
atmospheric. Joining Dirk, amongst others, are bassist Anders
Iwers from Tiamat and drummer Stefan Gemballa - Flowing Tears/Red
Aim. Here we have songs with very powerful and meaningful lyrics,
great harmonies and nice keyboards from Dirk's cousin Dennis Riehie.
Good stuff to get those brain cells ticking!! And, if you got
some extra dosh, apart from this album, other really powerful
albums that are inspiring me at the moment include: ZEBRA: IV;
Glenn Hughes: songs in the key of rock; Joe Lynn Turner: JLT;
Conspiracy: The Unknown (this is BIlly Squire from YES); Cold:
year of the spider; Autograph: Buzz; Evanescence: Fallen; Ignition:
Ignition ... and an absolutely amazing album called The masquerade
overture, by Pendragon (full of proggy epics remisniscent of the
best of Yes, Pink Floyd and Genesis). ENJOY!

 |
Artist:
BRITNY FOX 28th
July - 3rd August
Album: SPRINGHEAD MOTORSHARK
Label: SPITFIRE RECORDS
release date 04.08.03
Why: BRITNY FOX, NOW THERE'S A NAME FM THE PAST EH??? they've
been around since 1988 and with this new offering show that they
are still masters of their art! As many of you know, i love an
album that is rich with what i call"LIGHT AND SHADE",
meaning that i can listen to songs full of balls and oomph - eg.
" Pain" as well as quieter, melodic songs including
"is it real", and an 8 minute-plus epic song "sri
lanka" full of eastern melodies and chants. THis is an album
full of some great riffs and harmonies and i thoroughly enjoyed
it! CHECK IT OUT!
|
 |
Artist:
BLUES TRAVELLER 14th-20th
July
Album: TRUTH BE TOLD
Label: SANCTUARY RECORDS
release
date august 4th
Wehey,
i was in the mood for something to cheer me up and brighten
my day, and then the postman arrives with this uplifting album
"Truth be told". Ah how i love the threads of synchronicity!
From my featured album last week: One minute silence's "one
lie fits all" looking at the state of the world, here's
a real happy album, full of raunch n funk n roll and those great
harmonica riffs that are part of the trade mark of Blues Traveler.
If you dont know 'em, check this out! They've been around for
quite some years and have given us great listening and gigging
pleasure. I hope you will agree with me that this album is fun
& uplifitng and full of some cool lyrics about life n love!

 |
Artist:
PORNORPHANS 7th-13th
July
Album: BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL
Label: STATE OF DECAY RECORDS release
date october 2002
Those
of you who have been following my hit picks and ponderings here
on my website and in my monthly column in POWERPLAY MAGAZINE
will realise that my melodic musical taste ranges from the classic
to the new/nu. You should also have noticed that i share with
you a mixture of albums to not only enhance your CD collection,
but also to help us all figure out this crazy world we live
in! Amongst other great albums that have captivated my attention
at the moment - Bob Catley, Autograph, Glenn Hughes, Joe Lynn
Turner's solo album plus his offering on Nikolo Kotzev's Brazen
Abbott album, Royal Hunt & Evergrey to name but a few...
I have great pleasure in enticing you to enter the wierd and
wonderful world of the Pornorphans. Fronted by Totalrockgoddess
extraordinaire Jytt, 'a tantalizingly seductive mix of Marilyn
Manson and Shirley Manson' (Rock Sound), this is a tornado of
haunting vocals, razor sharp guitars, and soaring melodies which
should get your feet tapping, your heart racing AND your mind
thinking. With lyrics that touch on ose subjects including karma,
sex, sensuality and pain, the Pornorphans' music & words
will bore into your psyche and your soul! ENJOY!

 |
Artist:
QUEENSRYCHE 30th
June-6th
July
Album: TRIBE
Label: METAL-IS/SANCTUARY
Why: Powerful, melodic, evocative, are just a few of the things
that spring to mind when descibing this special album. Queensryche,
who have been titillating, teasing and expanding our consciousness
since 1982, are back for the first time in 6 years with their
original line up and are set to continue to alter the face of
rock'n'roll. Queensryche are devoted to the observation and analysis
of the human condition, as so fabulously expressed in the opening
song OPEN (your eyes). Geoff Tate - whose distinctive vocals merge
with, and complement, the music - sings about losing ourselves
and our identities as well as finding ourselves as part of the
bigger picture and the tribal beliefs of freedom that is the basis
of the American way. Here we have a wonderful mixture of songs:
including a Zeppelin/eastern groove ("open"), tribal
rhythms ("tribe), slower melodic offerings ("falling
behind") and the more upbeat RATM-esque/eastern song "Desert
Dance". Full of light and shade, this is an album to move
us, jog our memory that there is more to life than our own little
insular existence, and push us to reach out and hope. Brilliant!
Get it!
|
 |
Artist:
BLOODFLOWERZ 23rd-30th
June
Album: 7 BENEDICTIONS-7 MALEDICTIONS
Label: SILVERDUST RECORDS
Why: I bless you and tempt you, my fine followers, to enter the
wonderful world of light and darkness that is BLOODFLOWERZ, 7
benedictions/7 maledictions, featuring the lovely Kirsten on vocals.
Here we have their second album proving that "Diabolic Angel"
(their first record in 2002) was not a passing fad. Sit back with
a chalice of pure mountain water, or a goblet of heavenly mead,
and let BLOODFLOWERZ take you on a musical journey of discovery
thru these 14 traits of life... including envy & lust, greed
& faith, justice & prudence! Full of weight and grace,
strong riffs and haunting melodies, complete with meaningfull
passionate lyrics, this is gothicness at its best.
|
 |
Artist:
SOUNDISCIPLES 16th
-23rd June
Album: AUDIO MANIFESTO
Label: PEACEVILLE
Why: Well... helllllo! Almost one year later, I find this unintentionally
overlooked gem of an album in my collection. I put it in the CD
player, press play... and boom! My ears are amazingly engulfed
with the light and shade of SOOUNDISCLPLES. SO, what music is
it??? A lovely mixture of grooving/nu/floaty/metal sounds full
of strong riffs and melodies, with vocals sometimes reminiscent
of Lou Reed. From out of nowhere i happily listened all the way
through to a great variety of songs and have become a SOUNDISCIPLE
myself. Well done b0ys!
|
 |
Artist:
ZAR 2nd
June - 9th June
Album: HARD TO THE BEAT
Label: MTM
Why: A cool rockin melodic album with great harmonies and sexy
riffs. Add to this some songs with a touch of that Led Zeppelin
feel that i love so much - eg "schizophrenia" and you've
got a great addition to your CD collection. ZAR were formed in
1989 and you may remember their first album, "live your life
forever" with JOHN LAWTON (ex Uriah Heep) on vocals. They
have since released quite a few albums and this one - masterminded
by Tommy Clauss and created together with André Sauber
(vocals) and Lars Nippa (drums) - touches my heart and soul in
all the right places. Special tracks?? Check out "Perfect
Day" and "Hundred Rivers"... and.... welll....
actually... the whole album is fabulous.
|
 |
Artist:
BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST 26th
May-1st
June
Album: GONE TO EARTH - REMASTERED
Label: POLYDOR/UNIVERSAL
Why: From 1967 to now!!! Barclay James Harvest are a truly eternal
band. Innovative in their time, first adding woodwind and strings
and then the distinctive sound of the mellatron, the music lives
on! Universal/polydor have now remasterd some of their classic
albums, with bonus tracks and 'Gone To Earth' has truly touched
my soul! With classic songs including the album versions of 'Hymn',
and "Friend of mine" (complete with bonus single edits
too) this is anthemic prog-rock at its finest. My favorite???
"Taking me higher" takes me right there! And for approx
£7.50 it's nearly better than ... chocolate (hehe, you thought
i was going to say sex didnt you!!!) SO, sit back with your favorite
tipple, turn the lights down low, light candles and incense, and,
whether alone or with your favorite mate, let the music take you
there.
|
 |
Artist:
FLEETWOOD MAC 19th-25th
May
Album: SAY YOU WILL
Label: REPRISE/WEA INTERNATIONAL
Why: SAY YOU WILL proves to me that FLEETWOOD MAC are up there
amongst the long-established bands who can bring out a new album
full of great songs. There is something so unique about the FLEETWOOD
MAX sound: maybe it's the combination of the music and STEVIE
NICKS' distictive voice. These are ALL new songs, and yet, many
songs - eg the TITLE TRACK - "Say you Will" or "Thrown
Down", give you that warm familiar "FLEETWOOD MAC"
feeling, while others bring a new edge to the music eg. "Murrown
turning over in his grave". With the songwriting & lead
vocals mostly divided between STEVIE NICKS and LYNDSEY BUCKINGHAM,
here we have a brilliant textural mixture of voices and sweet,
clean guitars. Yes, Christine McVie is not here.... but Mick Fleetwood's
drums/percussion and John McVie's bass do not let us forget that
the FLEETWOOD MAC sound is the combination of the sum of the parts!
An uplifting album of meaningful lyrics, powerful harmonies, familiaresque
(!?) riffs and melodies... bringing sunlight into our lives!!
GET IT... GET IT NOW!

Artist:
STORMWIND 12th-18th
May
Album: RISING SYMPHONY
Label: MASSACRE
Why: Well hellllooo! STORMWIND's 6th album is an amazing
mixture of symphony, harmonies, great melodic guitars, double
bass power metal and slow heartwrenching passionate songs! This
album is wonderfully delivered by guitarist and founder Thomas
Wolf, vocalist "Thomas Vikstrom", ex-Candlemass, Andres
Olsson on bass (ex Narnia), keyboardist Kaspar Dahlqvist (Treasure
LAnd) and new drummer David Wwallin (ex Blacksmith). My favorites?
Well, check out "Eyes of change", "white man",
"streets of Prishtine" and "Excalibur", but
really, the whole album is fabulous and a pleasure to listen through
in one go because of the changes in tempo and atmosphere. Their
best offering so far!

SARACEN 28th
April-5th May
Album: RED SKY
Label: NOW AND THEN
Why: Melodic, powerful, driving rock, complete with fabulous harmonies
and smoooooth guitars that make my toes curl! Welcome to the world
of Saracen. Who started out as "Lammargier" pre 1981.
This is a great collection of new songs as well as some of their
classics. Here we have their first ever song "follow the
piper", regarded by many as the band's anthem, and never
available before on record. Also check out "Jeykll and Hyde"
from their 1981 session for the radio 1 Rock Show, with an (allbeit
rather quiet) intro by none other than someone sounding very much
like Tony WIlson and Tommy Vance! Other wonderful songs? ALL OF
EM! Coz they got both the melody as well as meaningful lyrics:
"We have arrived" all about UFOs and the slower "Faith",
dedicated to distant lovers, and when you can't find the right
words! Definately one to add to your collection for those mellower
moments.

April
Album: NATURAL DESTRUCTION
Label: ESCAPE MUSIC
Why: OOOh have i got another good melodic one for you in my rock
box! Natural Destruction is a delectable debut melodic rock album
from New Jersey ROckers, Aftermath. Most excellent! Throw Gun's
n Roses, Aerosmith and Bon Jovi into Pandora's cauldron, stir
in a hint of Queensryche and what do you get?? a great combination
of melody, riffs, harmonies, strong vocals and attitude. I thoroughly
enjoyed it and would suggest that you get yourselves a copy AND
support Escape music, an excellent record label which has brought
us the wonders of TURI, Graham BOnnet, Phantom's Opera and a re-release
of the excellent FM, to name but a few! AFTERMATH - another breath
of fresh air to tease and please.
